Guide School

Let us prepare you for a whole new career. Learn from our Orvis guides; techniques, tricks of the trade, and much more. Then let us help you get a job, either with us or another outfitter. This is a great course for anyone who is considering guiding for a living, someone who wants to do a better job teaching others or improve their fishing skills.

The course is seven nights and six days of instruction, and includes all meals and lodging. Your only extra costs will be for store, beer and wine, fishing licenses, any tips you may wish to leave, and an airport shuttle, if required.

We cover casting instruction, entomology, drift boat handling on lakes and rivers, business tips, meal preparation, and of course, lots of fishing. We will fish Merrell Lake, Tom Miner Creek, float the Yellowstone River, fish Yellowstone National Park, and we will spend a day on DePuy's spring creek(if space is available).

We keep our classes small(six students maximum). You will see what guided fishing is like from the guide's perspective and get "hands on" experience. Our goal is to teach our students how to create an experience for their clients. We teach proper etiquette, tricks for putting clients at ease, when to tell stories and when to be quiet, and other tricks.

Job placement assistance is also available. We hire most of our new guides from our school, and we have some good contacts in Montana and elsewhere. We will also get a list of outfitters for you in Montana. You will get a certificate from us, and you can use our phone number as a reference. We can help you create a résumé that would appeal to a potential employer. Click here for more information on employment.

All guides need to have Standard First Aid, and we recommend CPR, also. It is not required for our students, but it will be required to work as a guide. We used to teach it at the school, but it took up most of a day. You should be able to take the classes in the evening with your local American Red Cross.
