What to Bring

We encourage all of our students to bring there own fishing gear. Fly fishing is an art on some levels, and much easier to perform with instruments you are familiar with. On the other hand, we will be happy to lend you some of our equipment. We have great Orvis equipment in our fly shop, yours to use for no cost.

A five weight rod with weight forward line is the best all around rod for our waters. Nothing heavier than a 6 weight is normally required, and a 4 weight will handle most conditions. Floating lines are used almost exclusively, and will be all that is necessary for your stay with us. Tippets normally run from 6x to 4x.

We do wade a lot, and recommend Orvis's line of breathable waders. Chest waders are recommended. We do have waders available for you to borrow in a good selection of sizes.

Fly selection varies depending on a million factors. Contact us for more information on patterns and sizes for your dates.

The basics are important: good polarized glasses, preferably in an amber tint, sunscreen, hat, light raingear if you have it, and your basic fishing tools. Forceps, nippers, floatant, vest, net, etc. We do have a full shop on our premises if you need anything.

And remember to check the weather before you come! It varies a lot in Montana.

Click here to see a list of specific recommendations. Since we are an Orvis shop, we have listed Orvis items. But there are lots of other good products out there.
